Where Do You Think Your Going??

This weekend I took some time to sit down with my kids and watch the first of The Hobbit trilogy. There is a great line spoke by Bofur as Biblo is sneaking out of the cave in the mountains. Bilbo quietly is easing out as he gets to the exit of the cave Bofur simply asks “Where do you think your going?” And so dads, I ask you Where do you think your going?

Where do you think your going?

Where do you think your going?

Bilbo like so many of us are placed into situations in our life that we would have never expected or even expected. We are minding our own business and then KABOOM our life is turned upside down. But when it is upside down, where do you go? When you come home and the house has been torn apart, the bills are due or overdue, the job is going rough at work, or the family life is not just what you were expecting, where do you go?

Many a man has been asked the question of “Where do you think your going?”, just as Bilbo was asked by Bofur. We as men will give great answers as far as we are concerned. Most of the answers involve our own wants and desires. Things that will turn us away from our greatest need…our family. Except Bofur gave a great answer when Bilbo answered. “No, no, you can’t turn back now, your part of the company.” You see men, you can’t turn back now you are part of the company! You may not have a company consisting of 13 dwarfs and a wizard (if you do, let me know!) but you have a family that depends on you just as the company was depending on Bilbo. You are a vital part of the family. You have given an oath to be there for the company and face all dangers that may befall you or them.

Men, we can not run away, or expect some giant eagles to come in and rescue us. But we can listen to The One. Not the ring of power, but The One True God. Turn to His word and find comfort for your soul, a refuge for the weary, and a fortress to hide in. No one ever said that being the leader of a great company would be easy, nor did anyone ever say that it would be a short journey. But a good leader is able to follow the commands that he is given. When was the last time that you talked to your leader?

6 Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses every thought, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
8 Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable — if there is any moral excellence and if there is any praise — dwell on these things. 9 Do what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you
(Philippians 4:6-9 HCSB)

Till next time…
